THE WORLD ISN’T PERFECT, NEITHER ARE YOU!

Hello reader! I hope you enjoyed the festive season. While some of us took a break away from work and travelled to various places for different reasons, others stayed behind and kept the fire burning. Thank you for without you Botswana would have been ground to a halt while the economy lost huge amounts of revenue.

However, as we usher in the New Year, let us look back with a sizeable amount of introspection for without the latter we cannot move forward. It is only when you look back that you can determine where you are heading lest you go back the same path you traversed part of which might have been unpleasant. But remember, nothing is perfect. Therefore, we can neither claim 2013 was a perfect year nor the years that came before 2013.

Consequently, we must accept that life is a double bind or at best our existence vacillates between two opposites or twin emotions of happiness and sadness. We exist in what is called tensional unity. Thus, each emotion is pulling either way while at the same time existing as a single entity. In other words we cannot exist without these binary opposites. Otherwise it will be folly of us to think that somewhere some place there exists a perfect world.

If the world is not perfect how can you be perfect? Notwithstanding, the perfect thing to do is to acknowledge that you are not perfect. That to err is human. That much of our erring emanates not from our own doing but from our quest to understand who we are and what constitutes our “being” or “self”.

Therefore, against this backdrop, we must accept that humanity is inherently characterised by struggle and as we struggle to understand our individual self we commit mistakes some of which we might live to regret. However, my advice to you as we move forward in 2014 and beyond is that accepting your imperfections creates space for you to understand your better self.

The biggest mistake you can make is to think that those who err are either foolish or uncultured. It is to think that you are immune to committing certain mistakes, that it is only so and so who can commit such a mistake. No one was born a thief, murderer, abortionist, con artist, adulterer, you name it.

Consequently, I believe it is this imperfect world that defines us. When we are born we are thrust into a pre-determined world where, on the contrary, we are required to project ourselves as individuals but no one is autonomous. Thus, our lives are bound together and we cannot divorce ourselves from the imperfect world we live in.

Those who believe in the Bible are familiar with what Jesus said when the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her,” (John 8:1-11). The most important lesson is what Jesus said to the woman: “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more”…as we negotiate our existence between these binary opposites of an imperfect world.

Let us make a collective commitment to help each other to negotiate our existence however imperfect the world is. Learn to accept that you are not perfect but do not use that as a pretext to do evil. Incidentally, learn to accept that somewhere, somehow you will go through a crisis.

It does not mean that you were cursed or spells the end for you. Because the world is not perfect and neither are you, somewhere along you were bound to commit a sin or two. Do not dwell on your past mistakes or sins, they were your lessons but sin no more. The world is not perfect. If it was, there will be neither struggle nor sin but sin no more. ENDS
