Volume 54 Issue 4- April 2016

May 06, 2016

For the umpteenth time now, I have complained about a dirty Gaborone City. I wonder what is going on in the minds of many Batswana! What is it really that makes some people not to care about the environment they live in?

The bushes around the Greater Gaborone area have been turned into dumping sites especially for rubble. It is an eyesore and debilitaing taking walk around the city. Never mind that it is an upmarket suburb, it is just the same. There is indiscriminate waste disposal everywhere.

There is a saying that “destruction gives way to construction” but in Botswana it appears to be the other way round. Construction has given way to destruction as more buildings mushroom around the city. Those who dispose off rubble just throw it away willy-nilly and worse off in open spaces around the city.

Just take a walk to a nearby bush and you will no doubt know what I am talking about. I bet you will regret why you took that walk because you will come out dejected. Trucks transporting concrete or sand to building sites spill some of it on the roads. I feel pity for the city council because I always see workers trying to clean the city’s roads.

They clean today, the next morning you discover their efforts were all in vain. Another truck has just passed there and left a mess of the road, spilling concrete all the way from where it was sourced to its last destination.

I wonder what this says about us in relation to Vision 2016 which should be a culmination of our aspirations as a nation for the past 50 years. Are you saying even after 50 years we are still a nation that has to be educated and informed about what environmental hazards result from indiscriminate waste disposal?

Do you want to tell me that after 50 years we are still to learn about how environmental degradation threatens our safety and security as a nation? What about our unity and pride, do you reckon they may be threatened if we continue with such behaviour? I mean, how can we be proud of a filthy environment let alone be prosperous, productive and innovative in such a debilitating state?

Land is a very valuable resource and all other human attributes such as being compassionate, just and caring derive from a safe and secure environment underpinned by our own accountability to our deeds.

Let us introspect as we gear up for 50 years of independence so that when September 30 finally arrives, we celebrate our golden jubilee as a united and proud nation, for we can only be proud of a clean environment that we call Botswana.
