Volume 55 Issue 1- January-February 2017

January 17, 2017

Compliments of the New Year. For many people around the world a new year presents an opportunity to start afresh and to let go of failures of the previous year. Some will even write down New Year resolutions.

I am one of those who believe in setting goals for the year.  However, I believe one cannot move forward without looking back. For every failure, there is a lesson than can be learnt in order to avoid similar falls in future.  We cannot move forward with the New Year without reflecting on the past year.

As we start the New Year, let us not forget 2016. Let us learn from the successes and the failures of the year.

A lot happened during 2016. Among the notable events was the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. These were a clear demonstration that indeed Batswana are a proud and united nation. We put aside our differences and let patriotism take the lead.

2016 was not only the year we celebrated our country’s 50 years of independence. It also marked the end of vision 2016 and the start of vision 2036. Let us all familiarize ourselves with the new vision and its pillars. Let us align our individual and group resolutions TO our country vision. Each one of us should find a way of contributing to realisation of the national aspirations.

Parliament also approved the National Development Plan 11, themed “Inclusive Growth for Realisation of Employment Creation and Poverty Eradication”. The theme challenges everyone to contribute towards improving the livelihoods of Batswana by ensuring sustainable economic development.

Let us all do our part towards the realisation of the vision as well as the successful implementation of the development plan. Inside this issue is a story highlighting the notable local and international events of 2016.

One notable moment of the 50th celebration event is the picture of President Lt Gen Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama dancing to the tsaya thobane song. The singer, Dr Vom tells in a story on page 25 how that moment revived national interest in his work.

Also in this issue is the story about one of Botswana’s exports, Kaone Kario who continues to shine in the international arena. I hope her story will be a motivation to other youth not to give up on their dreams.

I hope you enjoy articles featured in this issue and learn something from them.
